Maira Kalman was born in Tel Aviv and moved to the US at the age of four. She is an illustrator, author and storyteller. Kalman is known for her illustrated books; Max the Dog, The Illustrated Elements of Style, and The Principles of Uncertainty, to name a few. In addition she is has done covers for The New Yorker Magazine, illustrated blogs for the New York Times, created set designs for the mark Morris Dance Group and has collaborated with numerous authors including Michael Pollen, Daniel Handler, Gertude Stein and David Byrne. The artist is represented by the Julie Saul Gallery in New York and her work has been exhibited at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
