Donald Baechler (November 22, 1956-April 4, 2022) worked from his great inventory of worldly images. Recorded on slides and collected in the archives of his studio, they were the sources for many of the compelling images in his paintings and graphic works. Baechler’s work has been noted for childlike imagery and thematic associations which have recurred throughout his career. Baechler’s seemingly ingenuous depictions of everyday objects and simple figures succeed in large part by tapping into our nostalgia for childhood. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Fisher Landau Center, New York; the Guggenheim Museum, New York; The Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, among others.
